Industrial electrical systems: design, safety and maintenance

In a business, the electrical system isn’t just a utility: it keeps machines, production lines and control systems running. Unplanned downtime costs time and money, and a fault can become a risk to people. That’s why design and maintenance call for a different approach from a home installation.

It starts with a load analysis

The first step is to understand how much power is needed, where and when: machinery, lighting, air conditioning, service sockets and future expansion. Cable sizes, protection ratings and the layout of the distribution system all depend on this analysis.

Clear, selective distribution

  • Main switchboard and sub-boards per department or line, so a fault stays contained.
  • Protection selectivity: when something goes wrong, only the breaker closest to the fault trips, not the main one.
  • Up-to-date diagrams and clear labelling, essential for working quickly and safely.

Efficiency: power factor and consumption

Motors and other inductive loads draw reactive power, which burdens the system and, under many supply contracts, adds extra charges. Properly sized power factor correction reduces losses and takes load off cables and transformers. Monitoring consumption by department also helps spot waste and anomalies.

Safety first

Effective earthing, residual current protection where required, emergency lighting and clear procedures for working on de-energised equipment are the foundations. Special environments, such as those with flammable dust or vapours, require specific equipment and installation rules.

Planned maintenance, not just repairs

  • Periodic checks of protective devices, connection tightness and earthing.
  • Thermal imaging of switchboards: it spots overheating connections before they fail.
  • Cleaning switchboards of dust and dirt, which encourage overheating and arcing.
